Medications
In a typical case of mesothelioma, medication management quickly becomes important. The patient will likely be prescribed a considerable amount of prescription medication over the course of the case, and must be constantly aware of the name, dosage, frequency and prescribing physician for each drug he or she is directed to take.
To this end, patients or their caregivers should keep a notebook and promptly note all changes made. This notebook should contain:
- a complete list of all drugs the patient is taking by both brand and generic names, including vitamins, herbal supplements, OTC medications, home remedies (e.g., baking soda), with the dosage amount, dosage schedule, and precautions (e.g., “take with food”) for each
- information (as above) on each new medication as prescribed, including possible interactions with other medications, foods or beverages, potential side effects, and instruction for missed doses
- pharmacy patient information sheets that are attached to each prescription (patronize the same pharmacy for all prescriptions, if possible)
- receipts, insurance forms, and other transaction information.
Medication management is of equal importance. Do not store medication in a haphazard fashion; instead, store medication in one convenient location, out of the reach of guests, children and pets, and under lock and key if possible.
Keep all medicines in a secure, dry place away from direct illumination, and do not allow them to be exposed to moisture, direct sunlight, heated air or other sources of heat.
