Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine consists of treatments originating outside of generally accepted medical practice. Folk medicine, spiritual practices and non-European medical paradigms are all practical alternatives to so-called Western medicine.

Some of the most popular alternative medicine for mesothelioma includes:

  • Acupuncture: the insertion of extremely fine needles into pressure points along the body’s surface, said to improve the balance and flow of the body’s natural vital energies
  • Aromatherapy: the use of fragrances to improve physical and psychological health
  • Massage: a tactile form of therapy which promotes blood flow, immune system function, and natural pain relief
  • Meditation: psychological techniques that can help relieve pain, stress, and anxiety. Some evidence exists that meditation can slow tumor growth
  • Supplements: the use of vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other naturally-derived substances to treat diseases
  • TENS therapy: the use of electrodes to deliver very mild electrical shocks to the body. TENS therapy is FDA-approved
  • Yoga: a form of exercise originating in India and intended to calm the mind, strengthen the body, improve flexibility, and bolster physical and psychological health

While incapable of curing mesothelioma, alternative treatments and therapies can help extend and improve the lives of those suffering from the disease.
